fucking great episode and I bet you knew it before you uploaded it. well scripted, funny, and I loved the special effects. I never even played banjoo kazooie (fuck me right?) but you conveyed your emotions so well that I got a little depressed listening about the downfall of the series

  • Gabriel

First Comment, Awesome Review Jon, Nuts and Bolts Has Finally Gotten the Justice it Deserves!!! Now.. how about Reviewing Grunty’s Revenge on the GBA???

  • Vinicius

you should try Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge for the gba, is actually a very decent Bk game. But never play Banjo Pilot also for the gba, that one sucks.

  • mind-ya-bizness

Well…. here it iiiiiiiiss :D I can’t believe they butchered such a beautiful franchise. I spent hours on these games as a kid and for them to just do that? They can’t just do that… it’s heartbreaking </3… but perhaps.. perhaps their is still time for redemption. Great video jontron, made me laugh till I shit myself xD

  • Infrared

Alright, so i’ve recently found you and the rest of the normalboots.com guys on Youtube and have really enjoyed reliving alot of classic gaming moments. I loved playing this game when i was younger because it felt like a new take on a Zelda game, Alot of exploring and over all fun and enjoyable game. In zelda you’re sent off to find things and you really have hardly any idea of where to go unless you played it much later and used walkthroughs which i always felt killed the game.

This review was funny as hell, i felt like i was watching AVGN jr. Keep it up bro

  • Furioso

Jon, I love ya, but this could have been done far better. 90% of the video was trashing how this was clearly not a Banjo game, which is indeed a travesty, but other than not liking the level design of the very first world you didn’t talk at all about anything else in the game. The way this was done it seems like if they had changed the name and characters you would have loved this game, and you should have talked about some of the technical stuff you didn’t like. On a personal note, once I got past how the game was clearly not anything Banjo related, I loved it. The missions and levels seemed half assed, but I enjoyed the car building mechanics so much that I still play it every now and then just to make crazy cars.

    • Emradrig

True the video was mostly about how the game was a betrayal to the Banjo Kazooie name but you have to admit it was immensely entertaining! On a technical level the game may not have been the biggest train wreck ever but to such a fan of the old games it was a let down he couldn’t get over.
And from those lines from L.O.G. it seems the game designers knew it. It was as if the game really was going to be a traditional Banjo Kazooie but the higher ups at Microsoft forced them to change it drastically so the designers were like “Fine, sure, whatever. You’re the boss. You know everything,” and made the intro to mock the attitude of microsoft toward the game.
Tip Tuck Nuts & Bolts probably would have worked just fine.
Jon probably didn’t go too in-depth with the gameplay because there wasn’t too much to say about it, at least not much that was funny. And in that respect he did a great job with the video: It was quite funny.

  • GMG Kurt

You did a great job building up to the game in a way that was amazingly fun to watch.

  • Steve The Pinecone

was that a birdemic reference at the end?

    Pretty sneaky Jontron!

    Great video anyway, loved it

  • Connor Wild

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN WAITING FOR THIS GREAT EPISODE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Level_Downer

really good video you always make me laugh. are gonna do any more fuck that shits? the first one was funny

  • dewbs

    • JonTron

Yes, I do Mr. Daniel sir.

      XD!!

I just don’t reply because it is annoying to reply using this thing.

*SCUMBAG JONTRON: COMPLAINS ABOUT THING ON HIS OWN WEBSITE*

  • Tarkkis

So, you were talking about the golden days of Rare, and yet you forgot to mention their greatest game ever: Jet Force Gemini. I am dissapoint.

But all in all, an absolutely brilliant work with the video!

  • Scottjc

For me its a mixed bag,

I loved BK, in fact I own both BK and BT n64 carts and xbla titles.

Then I played nuts and bolts, and my reaction was mostly the same to a point: what the hell is this?

You get the feeling that if BK wasn’t in the title you’d like the game more because as a Car building game it is pretty good, most levels are the same thing over and over again, eventually you have an all purpose vehical that you never have to edit that seems to fit every scenario.

Overall… i like nuts and bolts BUT and I stress BUT, I do not love it, in the way I loved every minute of the true Banjo games. I even dedicated an extreme amount of time into figuring out the perfect n64 emulation setup for Banjo-Tooie before it came out on xbla… 1964 0.8.5 + mupens rsp + the audio plugin from 1964 0.9.9 + jabos video plugin from pj64 1.6 = almost perfect emulation. Any other setup has the fire egg glitch or random crashes. It took so long because of many many playthroughs of testing.

But that was kind of a tangent, just to show how much I love Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, i’d never ever go through that kind of effort for nuts and bolts, never.

  • chrisbg99

Had this been a more traditional Banjo-Kazooie game I might have actually forced myself to suck it up and buy a 360 just to play it.

    A winner is my wallet.

  • BIrd Mask

Nice original music! Keep it up!

  • Elm

Finally jon, make more ya cunt <3

  • Goob115

This game is like I feel with Sonic 4. Its a decent game, I just don’t like how they made it a sequel to one of my favorite games…

  • stopaskingquestions

numero uno, you take about stealing music when at one point you stole the epic music from Continue? numero dos, (dos duos i don’t care) THERE’S HOPE JON! THERE’S HOPE! I YOU STILL BELIEVE IN BANJO-KAZOOIE AND BELIEVE THAT WHAT OL, SKULTILDA SAYS IS TRUE,THERE WILL BE ANOTHER GAME!!!

  • Eamon

I think there should be another episode (or series) like this, except all the characters from JonTron show join forces! Like Jon, Jacques, Rockington, The Sonic Team, Malkovich, Future Jon, The Shattered and Possessed Mighty Max Cartidge, etc. Also throw in everyone else from Normal Boots. That is a video I’d like to see! :D

  • João

    Who is ur cameraman?

  • Radn

Nuts & Bolts is the only xbox exclusive game that makes me even vaguely wish I had an xbox at home instead of a ps3. The vehicle building is actually really fun, although the missions are a mixed bag and many of them don’t give you much room for creativity. But then again, I didn’t play much of the originals, so I don’t have any attachment to the previous games’ mechanics. I also think it was pretty funny for rare Rare to troll its fans by making the third a vehicle construction sandbox game (Halo 4: Cart Racing Evolved would be hilarious as well).

On a broader note, when fans punish companies for trying new things rather than retreading old ground, is it any surprise that E3 is composed of 90% sequels?

On a different note, how many of these next-generation updates have actually been successful? The problem with updating a game that was once innovative is that those innovations have diffused into other games over the intervening years. A next-gen sequel is caught in this trap where it can’t change things without the fans complaining, but if it doesn’t change things, the game won’t feel ‘the same’ or as great as its predecessors, because that feeling of greatness came from being exposed to something new, from having your video-gaming horizons expanded. The next-gen sequel to a beloved game is tasked with the contradictory goal of being revolutionary again without changing anything. If Rare had taken the Nuts & Bolts setting and engine and just done the old platforming mechanics on top of it, reviewers would have said that it was very pretty, but it just didn’t feel the same, that it lacked ‘something’ from the previous titles.

    • Troggyman

You seem to have missed the point. JonTron even said so himself; if they wanted to make an original idea, then make it a new IP, or a spinoff with a name that clearly states it is one. Instead, they decided to capitalize on an already successful name, and even bash the old games while at it.

  • Brent

I love you and your work. keep being an awesome person.

  • David

    Jontron, your vids are awesome.

  • Mystifi

I understand that they are planning on making another banjo game?

    Yes?
    No?

  • Steve The Pinecone

Jontron, was that a birdemic reference at the end?

    Pretty sneeky Jontron
Great video anyway, been waitin for this one for a while

That game did not break the fourth wall. It ABUSED IT. That was in no way a breaking of it, it was a complete shattering.

And then they changed they style of game-play and screwed the whole game over. WHY?!?!

      Hi Jon.

  • Parapsyche

Awesome vid Jon! This game really is blasphemous and it’s hard to believe that this is what came of the B-K series after Tooie :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/Tarkkis Ville Tarkiainen

Talk of the golden age of Rare, and no mention of Jet Force Gemini? Shame on you!

Anyways, great work with the video, perfection as always.

  • C Ohara

Hey man. I’m out in Japan watching your show. Love it. “But they never dooooooooooo!” Reminiscing about this during work made my day. Watching for the third time!

    You a RedLetterMedia fan?

  • C Ohara

Dude, what is that song during the credits?

  • Sonicwillneverdie

This game actually seems promising on the intro level, but I should’ve known that everything good in my life has a catch… oh yeah, Nice Vid

  • Scott

Laughed my ass off as usual, great show. More LoL casting!

  • Dradeeus

I actually thought the opening intro was kinda cute and funny, I don’t mind them breaking the 4th wall in that respect. But. You don’t do that, and then basically taunt and tease the player who’s expecting an actual Banjo Kazooie game by saying. “LOL, YOU DIDN’T WANT ANOTHER BANJO KAZOOIE GAME. TAKE THIS RACING THING INSTEAD.”

  • SolidTheSoldier

I’m only 17 and Banjo Kazooie was one of the biggest parts of my chilhood, sad to see it go THAT direction that sequals to classics seem to go, oh well, I suppose we can always replay the hell out of the classics :P

  • http://twitter.com/GaijinGoomba Gaijin Goomba

    =( I miss Rockington…

  • http://twitter.com/Darkhyrulelord Adrian

The game seemed to start off funny and quirky as it was self-aware that there hasn’t been a Banjo Kazooie game for a while but to tack on a car building mechanic in the game (especially when it does get rather boring) is not the way to do it. It should have been a new IP to begin with, but that wouldn’t have made money so they slapped Banjo’s name on it. ….*sigh*

Notice in “space” the box says 7+. But then it says 10+. Meaningless comment is meningless

Jon I thought of a Conkers bad fur day(rating and humor/ banjo-kazooie(colletathion)/psychonauts(fighting and mobility) game where you play has a robot in charge reversing the nuclear holocaust. Thats what we all want and i’ll making happen god flapjack damnit.

  • jerrrrrrrry

    end .was fake

he actually just returned that game to GameStop for a refund.

  • jbpetes

I still have hope. Look at Ubisoft with Rayman. It took several games of the “Rabbid” series before they decided to go back to basics with Rayman: Origins and now they are developing Rayman:Legends. There is still hope.

  • Locke554

I think that you pretty much summed things up for this game. When I first saw the teaser, I thought to my self, “Gonnagetthisgamegonnagetthisgamegonnagetthisgame!!!!!”…then I waited and waited till it finally came out. Before going headlong into buying it, I read reviews and saw gameplay. Then a piece of my heart decided to die…Because cars.

With this horrible taunting, Rare is just dead to me now…actually, they’ve pretty much been dead to me ever since they were bought by Microsoft. But, this was just the final nail in the coffin. I highly doubt that they will ever make anything that was as good as, or dare I say it, better than what they created in the 90′s and 2000′s.

Anyway, funny review. Your singing always gets me teary eyed with laughter.

  • vohaul

Am I the only one who hears the beginning of the powerhouse at 10:27?
Nice video btw, watched it 3 times already :3

i know you’ve heard this a billion times but you are epic!

  • ThisisMyNickname

wait… i thought you said you lost rockington?

  • Dusk

John, have you heard of a game called “Metal Arms, Glitch in the system” for GameCube? It’s hard to find I think but you should review it.

  • Lleji

I just have one problem with your story, Jon. The first Banjo-Kazooie game revived Nuts & Bolts after you slapped it into your N64… I find this highly unlikely. The original Banjo-Kazooie is way too PURE to assist something so CORRUPT. =P

    • masterdoomsamus

evry light must have its shadow and evry shadow must have its light.

      • Lleji

        Very true.

Also, can you really blow 8bit Mario’s head off (like they showed in the trailer many years ago)? O_o

    Dear Jon,

Please do a video on “Metal Wolf Chaos”…….please…I beg of you..

  • Vladimir Styx

You think after diddy Kong racing they would have realized that an overworld in a racing game just doesnt mix well.

  • Necromancer

If you strapperJaque to your back and got Christine O’Donnell to play Gruntilda the Witch, you could reenact Banjo and Kazooie!

  • sparks

john i realy think u should play metroid other m just saying

I know everyones hoping that Husein Bolt can beat his record again, but the odds against a man winning gold twice in a row in the Olympic hundred meter sprint is very VERY slight. I still hope he makes it, even though I am Canadian. I hear black men are well…HUNG! Tee-hee.

I’ve never played Banjo 1 or Tooie. But, I remember my roommate would show off the “customize-your-own-vehicle” section. It took a few minutes, but I had the feeling that something was inherently wrong with this game. One being the machine, no matter how small, were always bulky and clunky. My roommate would always have to make these wide angle turns. number 2…well I was just reeeeeaaaaallly bored.

  • MinorAnnoyance

I played both Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie and still do whenever I need a quick shot of nostalgia. But when I played Nuts & Bolts, it eerily reminded me of another Rare N64 game I played: Diddy Kong Racing.

Everything from the usage of planes, boats and cars to the massive, empty overworlds make me feel that this wasn’t supposed to be just Banjo-Threeie, but also a sort of sequel to Diddy Kong Racing which used the Banjo-Kazooie IP because Nintendo owns the Donkey Kong IP.

I’m just throwing this out there to see if this isn’t just some crazy theory of mine and to try and forget this… thing sold as a Banjo-Kazooie game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/daniel.r.ramirez.35 Daniel Renteria Ramirez

    You overlooked Jet Force Gemini

  • Liam

I honestly believe that the design of that game was not intentional as Microsoft did purchase Rareware, forcing them into making such a shitty sequel with unspeakably bad in-game dialog, as for the part where you can run around on the ground as traverse empty enviroments I believe Rareware was screaming out to the veteran players of the Banjo series that it was originally going to be a classic adventure game until Microsoft intervened and made them make that abomination. I now consider Microsoft my mortal enemy, they did the unspeakable, fuck up Banjo and Kazooie.
